Santa Clara County in California has sued Meta, alleging the company profited from scam ads on Facebook and Instagram in violation of California false advertising and unfair business practice laws, Reuters’ Jeff Horwitz reports. The complaint alleges that the company earned as much as $7B in annual revenue from “high-risk” scam ads which show clear signs of being fraudulent, and rather than cracking down on fraudulent advertisers, Meta largely tolerated the misconduct and even established “guardrails” to block scam reduction efforts if they cost the company too much money.
