Japan has cancelled a top-level meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after the Trump administration abruptly told Tokyo to spend more on defense, according to Financial Times’ Demetri Sevastopulo and Leo Lewis, citing three people familiar with the matter. The U.S. officials were due to meet Japan’s defense minister Gen Nakatani and foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya in Washington on July 1 for annual security talks, but Japan scrapped the meeting after the U.S. asked its Asian ally to boost defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, higher than its earlier request of 3%, the report said.
