Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Meta‘s (META) Instagram, on Wednesday disputed claims that the platform prioritized making money over the mental health of young users in a landmark tech addiction case, saying social media is not “clinically addictive” and that Meta was careful to test features used by young people, The New York Times’ Eli Tan and Cecilia Kang report. Social media could cause some harm, he said, but added that Meta is a “steward” of strong safety protocols for teenagers. “There’s always trade-off between safety and speech,” Mosseri said. “We’re trying to be as safe as possible and censor as little as possible.” Mosseri has led Instagram since 2018 and was the first executive to testify in the case against Meta and YouTube (GOOGL).
