After falling behind in the AI race back in August, Google researchers hoped a new feature, a fast image generator, would given the company an edge over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Katherine Blunt of The Wall Street Journal reports. Within days of its release, Nano Banana had the top spot in performance rankings on LM Arena and exceeded Google’s usage expectations. Additionally, by September, Googe’s Gemini AI app was the most downloaded app on the Apple app store. Utilizing its deep roots in science and research, Google managed to leap to the front of the AI pack.
