Game On: Nintendo teases ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’

NEW RELEASES: This week’s most notable new release is the early access version of Electronic Arts’ (EA) free-to-play skateboarding game “Skate,” the first new game in the series in 15 years. The title launches in early access on September 16 for PC, iOS, Android, macOS, Xbox One (MSFT), Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 (SONY), and PlayStation 5. Also out this week is Techland’s (TCEHY) survival horror game “Dying Light: The Beast,” which launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 18, with PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game launching later in 2025.

NINTENDO DIRECT: On Friday, Nintendo (NTDOY) hosted an(CMCSA) and Illumination. Along with a brief teaser trailer, Nintendo said the Wii games “Super Mario Galaxy” and “Super Mario Galaxy 2” would both arrive on Switch and Switch 2 on October 2 and also showcased premiere trailers for upcoming Switch 2 titles “Mario Tennis Fever,” “Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Switch 2 Edition,” and “Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.”

Looking to third-party titles, Nintendo confirmed that Square Enix’s (SQNXF) “Final Fantasy VII Intergrade” would launch on Switch 2 on January 22, 2026, and revealed that Square Enix is working on a remake of “Dragon Quest VII,” which will be playable on Switch 2 and other consoles on February 5, 2026. The company also unveield at September 25 release date for Supergiant’s action roguelike “Hades 2,” which has been in early access on PC for a year and a half, and confirmed that Capcom’s (CCOEY) upcoming survival horror game “Resident Evil Requiem” will launch on Switch 2 on February 27, 2026, along with its PC, PS5, and Xbox Series versions.

In terms of other first-party announcements, Nintendo said that upcoming action-adventure title “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” will release for Switch and Switch 2 on December 4, 2025, and that action title “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” will be out November 5. In terms of brand-new games, Nintendo unveiled tactical RPG “Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave,” out 2026, “Pokemon Pokopia,” also out 2026, and “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream,” out Spring 2026.

‘BORDERLANDS 4’ SALES: Take-Two’s (TTWO) latest game “Borderlands 4,” which launched late last week, has already passed 2M units sold, having sold nearly 750,000 units on Steam alone last week, making it the PC gaming platform’s top-selling game in terms of unit sales, according to Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott. The firm’s estimates also indicate that “Borderlands 4” has sold over 1M units on Steam overall, having generated roughly $150M in revenues, positioning the game among 2025’s most lucrative launches for a big-budget video game. Other top-sellers on Steam last week were indie titles “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” “Peak,” and the first “Hollow Knight.

ROBLOX/XBOX: Last week, Roblox (RBLX) announced that it has launched a new version of its app for Microsoft Store and Xbox on PC. The new update is designed to provide better performance and stability on Windows PCs, Xbox profile integration, and support for future Microsoft devices, including the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. “At Roblox, we’re committed to making sure that every player on any device has the best and most immersive experience,” Roblox said. “To that end, today we’re excited to announce we’ve taken a major step forward in how our platform evolves and scales across the Xbox ecosystem with the release of a new version of Roblox for the Microsoft Store and Xbox on PC.”
