Game On: Microsoft announces ROG Xbox Ally handhelds

“Game On” is The Fly’s weekly recap of the stories powering up or beating down video game stocks.

XBOX SHOWCASE: During its Xbox Games Showcase this past weekend, Microsoft (MSFT) and Asus unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, two gaming handhelds that will run Windows games from multiple storefronts, including Steam. At the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft said: “We’re working to make sure you’re able to play Xbox games wherever you are, which is why every new game in the show is Xbox Play Anywhere. With a single purchase, you can play with Xbox, including your progress and achievements, across Xbox console, PC and Xbox Ally-at no additional cost. And we also offered a brand-new place for you to play with the reveal of the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds, launching later this year. Xbox Ally will play games from across your entire library – including the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and Battle.net, not to mention leading third-party PC storefronts. Both launch holiday 2025 in select markets, with availability to follow for other markets where ROG Ally series are sold today. What’s more, we confirmed that the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available for Xbox Ally and Game Pass at launch, and that every game in the show will run on Xbox Ally.”

On the software side, Microsoft provided a world premiere trailer for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 7” with no release date; a more in-depth look at upcoming RPG “The Outer Worlds 2,” out October 29, 2025; the announcement of a downloadable expansion to 2024 hit game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” titled “Order of the Giants,” out September 4; the arrival of Square Enix (SQNXF) titles “Final Fantasy XVI” and “Final Fantasy VII Remake” on Xbox consoles for the first time; the confirmation that Sega (SGAMY) is remaking “Persona 4” for modern consoles; and a more in-depth look at future action game “Clockwork Revolution.”

SONY STATE OF PLAY: Meanwhile, Sony (SONY) hosted a (CCOEY) “Pragmata,” out 2026 for PS5; a new trailer for Konami’s (KONMY) “Silent Hill f,” out September 25, 2025 for PS5; a reveal for 505 Games’ “Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement,” out 2026 for PS5; a reveal of Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles,” a remaster of “Final Fantasy Tactics,” out September 30, 2025 for PS5 and PS4; a reveal of Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) “Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection,” a collection of classic “Mortal Kombat” titles,” out 2025 for PS5 and PS4; a reveal of the Project Defiant, a wireless fight stick controllers for PS5; a new trailer for Konami’s “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater,” out August 28 for PS5; a reveal for Koei Tecmo’s (TKHCF) “Nioh 3,” out early 2026 for PS5; a reveal for Eidos Montreal’s “Thief VR – Leagcy of Shadow” for PSVR2, coming in 2025; a new trailer for IO Interactive’s “007: First Light,” out for PS5 in 2026; a new trailer for Sony’s “Ghost of Yotei” for PS5, out October 2, 2025; and a reveal for Marvel Comics fighter “Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls” for PS5 and PC out 2026.

SWITCH 2 U.K. SALES: Following its June 5 release, the Nintendo Switch 2 (NTDOY) has become the fastest-selling Nintendo console in U.K. history, The Game Business’ Christopher Dring reported Tuesday, citing data from NielsenIQ. The brand new machine beats the previous best-selling hardware launch for Nintendo, namely 2011’s Nintendo 3DS, and outsold the launch of the first Switch by more than two to one, Dring said, noting that the Switch 1 was very supply constrained during its 2017 launch. The Switch sold over 80,000 units in the U.K. at launch, while the 3DS sold 113,000 units, Dring added.
