According to early findings, the European Commission believes Meta Platforms (META) and ByteDance’s TikTok have breached the European Union’s rules on illegal content, Gian Volpicelli of Bloomberg reports. The EC said Facebook, Instagram, and TIkTok are in breach of the Digital Services Act, DSA, because they do not allow independent researchers from easily accessing data on the platforms. If the companies are unsuccessful at challenging the accusations, they may face fines under the DSA that could reached as much as 6% of the company’s global sales.
