The EU plans to designate WhatsApp’s Channels as a “Very Large Online Platform” under the Digital Services Act, meaning it must meet moderation and transparency standards, Bloomberg’s Gian Volpicelli reports. The designation will require WhatsApp to carry out risk assessments and disclose user numbers every six months, with potential fines reaching as much as 6% of a company’s annual global sales, according to people familiar with the matter. The move will not impact WhatsApp’s core messaging feature, as the Digital Services Act does not regulate private communications, Volpicelli writes.
