In the opening hour of the evening session, U.S. equity futures are trading mixed – S&P 500 is up 0.2%, Nasdaq 100 is up 0.1%, while Dow Industrials are off by 0.1%. In Commodities, WTI Crude Oil is back above $63 per barrel despite a second consecutive week of build in API Petroleum inventories, with traders balancing geopolitical risk after Israeli bombing of Hamas leadership in Qatar earlier today against demand concerns of the slowing economy. In Metals, Gold and Silver are tracking U.S. Treasuries and pausing their recent climb, with investors’ focus shifting from today’s near-1M downward revision in job creation to tomorrow’s release of CPI data – the last key economic event heading into next week’s FOMC decision.

Energy started the day as the best performing sector on the S&P 500, though Communication Services ended the session well ahead of the others as Alphabet (GOOGL) hit fresh record highs above $240 and Meta (META) continued its gradual ascend. Materials traded especially poorly however as major copper and steel names folded – Freeport McMoran (FCX) was one of the worst performing stocks on the index with a 6% slide while Albermarle (ALB) was the weakest name, with selling attributed to Chinese electric-vehicle-battery maker CATL restarting a lithium mine.
