Thursday started on a hopeful note for investors following reports of talks on trade and tariffs between President Trump and China President Xi. Sentiment deteriorated however with an escalation of tension between Trump and Tesla CEO Musk, who had remained vocally critical of the administration’s fiscal plans as the Big Beautiful Bill works its way through Congress. Tesla shares closed the day down over 14%, weighing on the Consumer Discretionary space – the worst performing sector in the S&P 500. Investor focus turns to Friday’s non-farm payrolls and May employment data after alarming ADP report earlier this week as well as continued uplift in the weekly jobless claims also out this morning.
