Closing Bell Movers: Google jumps 7% on constructive antitrust ruling

In the opening hour of the evening session, U.S. equity futures are mixed, with Dow Industrials off by a decimal but S&P 500 up 0.3% and Nasdaq 100 up 0.3%.  Following a broad-based risk-off day spurred by a global bond market rout, the major indices are supported by a ruling out of  U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that while Google is  barred from exclusive internet search contracts, it will not have to divest its Chrome browser to meet antitrust compliance.

In commodities, September was met with rising volatility as WTI Crude Oil remains bid above $65 per barrel.  Fiscal concerns – amplified by legal uncertainty for U.S. tariff revenue designed to cushion against Washington’s spendthrift – have also propelled precious metals.  Gold remains bid near $3,600 and Silver has tested $42 per ounce levels – both record highs.

Earlier on Tuesday, Energy was the best performing sector in the S&P 500 amid surging oil prices, while Real Estate was the worst performer, with higher interest rates at the long-end of the curve offering no relief to the housing industry.  With just over two weeks to go to the next Fed decision, investors will get another update on the labor sector this week, starting with the potentially more seriously considered ADP private payrolls data on Thursday.
