Amazon preparing to make a big change to its Fire tablet lineup, with plans to release a higher-end tablet next year offering the Android operating system for the first time, Greg Bensinger of Reuters reports, citing six people familiar with the matter. Since the Fire tablet’s original release in 2011, Amazon has used a “forked” version of the Android operating system with custom modifications. The multiyear project, known internally as Kittyhawk, could lead Fire tablets to be more desirable for customers who want compatibility with other Android devices. The project could be delayed or cancelled, the sources added.
