The union of Allegiant Air’s pilots is blocking the company’s attempt to secure permanent residency for foreign pilots from Chile, Australia, and Singapore, causing their immigration status to be left in limbo, Doyinsola Oladipo of Reuters reports. The union has refused to certify to the U.S. Department of Labor that the pilot positions meet “prevailing wage” standards, a certification that is a requirement for pilots’ green card applications. Instead, the union alleges the airline has misrepresented its intentions to permanently hire these pilots and argues instead of hiring foreign pilots, Allegiant should offer industry-standard compensation.
