Tesla Makes History by Delivering First ‘Fully Autonomous’ Vehicle to Customer

Story Highlights

Tesla made history by completing the first fully autonomous, driverless delivery of its Model Y auto from Giga Austin to a customer’s doorstep.

Tesla Makes History by Delivering First ‘Fully Autonomous’ Vehicle to Customer

Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla (TSLA) achieved a bold feat on June 27 by delivering a “fully autonomous” vehicle to a customer from Gigafactory Texas. CEO Elon Musk was enthralled by the accomplishment and shared the news on X but also faced criticism. To silence his critics, Musk later posted a video of the vehicle’s 30-minute drive from the end of Giga Texas’ production line to the customer’s home.

Musk had earlier informed that this event would take place on June 28, but, for the very first time, the company has actually achieved its target ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Tesla’s robotaxi service launch in Austin is facing some trouble. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reviewing several reported incidents, including hard braking, driving in the wrong lane, and dropping off passengers at a busy intersection.

Here Are the Details of Tesla’s First Driverless Delivery

Tesla’s Model Y delivered itself to a customer on Friday, catching the attention of both fans and critics. The EV drove itself on the highway, navigating traffic signals, suburban traffic, and residential neighborhoods without a driver on board or a safety monitor present.

Following the delivery, Musk posted on X, “There were no people in the car at all and no remote operators in control at any point. FULLY autonomous!” He also added that this was the first fully autonomous drive without anyone on board or any remote handling.

While some doubted the authenticity of the drive, others were quick to praise. For instance, Chinese rival Xiaomi’s (XIACF) CEO Lei Jun congratulated the company on achieving this incredible feat and noted, “Tesla is indeed amazing, leading the industry trends in many areas, especially FSD. We still have to continue learning!”

Nonetheless, Tesla has to compete with Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Waymo in the robotaxi service market, where the company has already established a strong reputation. Waymo has been operating a fully autonomous robotaxi service with passengers on board, including on highways, for more than a year in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
