The White House is considering sending up to 10,000 additional combat troops to the Middle East in the next few days, a senior U.S. defense official told the Wall Street Journal. The move comes despite President Trump delaying strikes on Iranian power plants until April 6 and saying that peace talks “are going very well.”

U.S. Weighs Military Options Against Iran

Earlier this week, Axios reported that the Pentagon is preparing a “final blow” to Iran that could involve deploying ground troops and a large-scale airstrike operation. Trump hasn’t decided which course of action to take yet, but sources say he’s prepared to escalate if talks with Iran don’t produce concrete results soon.

A senior Iranian official noted that the country is interested in negotiations but has not responded to a request from the U.S. to hold an official meeting. The official added the meeting is still awaiting approval from Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader.
