S&P 500 Index Today: Earnings Beats Boost the SPX

The S&P 500 (SPX) index saw limited movement on Friday, allowing it to close out the week with a slight gain. This comes alongside news of the U.S. getting closer to a trade deal with Japan. This is part of President Donald Trump’s tariffs strategy, which includes a hold on high tariffs to allow for such negotiations.

The one country that doesn’t seem ready to secure a trade deal is China. The country’s leaders have discussed efforts to shore up its economy during the trade war. This seems to suggest that the U.S. and China aren’t close to reaching a trade agreement that would remove the 145% tariffs on Chinese imports. Interestingly, China has scaled back some of its retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.

Today’s news has the S&P 500 index up 0.06% on Friday. While that’s not much, being in the green is a positive way to finish out the week. It’s also been a strong week for the index with a 4.96% rally over the past five days.
