Sony Stock Jumps as a LittleBigPlanet Remaster Rumor Lifts Gamers’ Hopes

Sony (SONY) stock was up on Friday alongside a rumor that LittleBigPlanet will be remastered for the PlayStation 5. This rumor comes from an IMDb page for the game, which includes PS5 box art. This has sparked speculation that PlayStation intends to release a remaster of the game on its current console.

Don’t Miss TipRanks’ Half-Year Sale

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that a LittleBigPlanet remaster is on the way. That’s due to the nature of IMDb, which allows anyone to create a page. That means this page could be a fake. A closer look at the game’s box art cements this, as Woody from Disney’s (DIS) Toy Story is tucked away among the Sackboys and Sackgirls.

While Disney did collaborate with Sony to include a Sackboy costume of Woody in LittleBigPlanet 2, 3, and the PSVita version of LittleBigPlanet, Woody never appeared in the game. His inclusion in the box art is a red flag that this is a fan-made image.

Will PlayStation Remaster LittleBigPlanet?

A LittleBigPlanet remaster isn’t off the table, even if this latest rumor is likely fake. The series has continued to appear on PlayStation consoles over the years, including the release of Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PlayStation 5 in 2020.

While Astro Bot has secured its place as the new PlayStation mascot following the success of its self-titled game last year, there’s till plenty of room for a secondary mascot in Sackboy. The video game industry is also in an age of nostalgia, with remasters for older games frequently performing well with gamers who grew up with them. This could result in a LittleBigPlanet remaster to take advantage of this trend.

SONY stock was up 3.27% as of Friday morning, extending a 24.65% year-to-date rally and 50.32% 12-month gain.

Is SONY Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for Sony is Moderate Buy, based on two Buy and one Hold rating over the past three months. With that comes an average SONY stock price target of $29, representing a potential 9.93% upside.
