The digital future is getting a major security upgrade as the threat of quantum computing looms on the horizon. On Monday, Ripple unleashed a high-tech guard dog in the form of a four-phase roadmap to make the XRP Ledger (XRPL) completely quantum-resistant by 2028. This move comes as experts warn that traditional encryption could soon be cracked in minutes, forcing the industry to move toward post-quantum safety measures ahead of earlier-than-expected deadlines.

Ripple Outlines a Four-Phase Defense to Guard Against “Q-Day”
The firm is trading current encryption standards for a new layer of protection that can withstand the world’s most powerful computers.
The new strategy, detailed by senior engineering director Ayo Akinyele, sets a target for full readiness a year before Google’s own 2029 deadline for similar technology. The first phase sets up a “Quantum-Day” safety net. If a sudden breakthrough happens, the network will automatically block old-style signatures and guide users toward quantum-safe accounts.
Throughout 2026, phases two and three will involve testing new algorithms recommended by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ripple is also teaming up with research firm Project Eleven to build early prototypes for secure wallets and validator systems.
Nine-Minute Cracking Threat Accelerates the Need for Change
The industry is moving past the idea of distant risks as new research shows how fast a quantum machine can steal a private key.
The urgency of this project is fueled by a scary new reality called “harvest now, decrypt later.” Attackers are currently collecting encrypted data, waiting for the day a quantum computer is strong enough to unlock it.
In fact, a recent Google (GOOGL) Quantum AI research report shows that a machine with 500,000 physical qubits could derive a private key from an exposed public key in just nine minutes. This is a 20-fold jump in speed compared to previous estimates. Ayo Akinyele noted that this makes long-term security a priority today, rather than a problem for the next decade.
Key Rotation Gives XRPL a Massive Head Start Over Competitors
One of the biggest advantages of the XRP Ledger is its native key rotation feature. Unlike Ethereum (ETH-USD), which requires more complex steps, XRPL allows users to swap out vulnerable keys for new, safe ones without having to move their funds to a different account.
This is a major relief considering that over 6.9 million Bitcoin currently sit in older wallets that are wide open to quantum attacks. While XRP (XRP-USD) traded near $1.44 following the news, the real focus is on the long-term survival of the network as it prepares to stay ahead of the quantum era.
