Shell: Resilient Cash Generation and Robust Capital Returns Support Buy Rating Despite Near-Term Earnings Miss

Morgan Stanley analyst Martijn Rats maintained a Buy rating on Shell (UK) today and set a price target of p2,811.00.

Meet Samuel – Your Personal Investing Prophet

Martijn Rats has given his Buy rating due to a combination of factors that, in his view, outweigh the weaker-than-expected quarterly numbers. While Shell’s fourth-quarter earnings and operating cash flow came in modestly below market forecasts, these misses were largely driven by temporary elements such as higher upstream operating costs and unusually soft seasonal performance in Marketing, rather than a deterioration in the core franchise. He also notes that Integrated Gas performance was robust and ahead of expectations, underscoring the strength of one of Shell’s key profit engines. Over the full year, Shell still generated substantial organic free cash flow, demonstrating that the business continues to create significant cash even through a softer quarter.

At the same time, Rats highlights that Shell is sustaining very strong shareholder returns, maintaining a sizeable share buyback program of $3.5 billion per quarter and delivering a further 4% dividend per share increase in line with guidance. Although net debt and gearing ticked higher, leverage remains at a level he appears to consider manageable when set against the company’s cash generation capacity and capital return commitments. In aggregate, he seems to judge that Shell’s resilient full‑year cash flows, disciplined and consistent capital returns, and solid performance in key segments justify a positive outlook on the stock. These elements underpin his conviction that the shares offer an attractive risk‑reward profile, supporting his Buy recommendation despite the near-term earnings and cash flow shortfall.

In another report released on January 25, Jefferies also maintained a Buy rating on the stock with a $0.00 price target.
