Peter Grom has given his Hold rating due to a combination of factors related to Energizer’s near-term fundamentals and valuation. He expects first-quarter earnings to come in slightly below consensus and projects a high single-digit decline in organic net sales, reflecting softer underlying demand, tough comparisons to prior storm-driven sales, and a headwind from earlier display shipments. While recent winter storms have improved investor sentiment and the stock has rallied sharply, he sees limited justification to raise estimates yet, as management is unlikely to incorporate potential weather-related upside into formal guidance at this stage. His full-year outlook calls for essentially flat organic growth and gross margins roughly in line with management’s expectations, suggesting only modest fundamental improvement.
At the same time, Grom acknowledges that the stock’s valuation looks appealing on a relative basis and that the risk/reward could prove favorable if the company executes and demand trends stabilize. However, he emphasizes that there are still numerous moving parts, including macro pressures and category softness, which reduce visibility into both revenue and earnings trajectories. His longer-term EPS forecast sits near the low end of the company’s guidance range and slightly below consensus, reinforcing a tempered stance on upside. Taken together, the mix of an attractive but not compelling valuation, subdued growth expectations, and uncertainty around the outlook leads him to maintain a Neutral (Hold) rating with a $19 price target.
In another report released yesterday, Citi also maintained a Hold rating on the stock with a $0.00 price target.
Based on the recent corporate insider activity of 22 insiders, corporate insider sentiment is positive on the stock. This means that over the past quarter there has been an increase of insiders buying their shares of ENR in relation to earlier this year.
