Quantum Computing News: Funding, Defense Work, and Chip Breakthroughs Drive Push Beyond the Lab

Story Highlights
  •  Quantum firms are moving beyond research, with IPO plans, defense contracts, and chip scaling efforts signaling a shift toward real-world applications.
  •  Despite rapid progress, most companies remain cautious, citing unclear use cases as the top barrier to large-scale investment.
Quantum Computing News: Funding, Defense Work, and Chip Breakthroughs Drive Push Beyond the Lab

It’s Thursday, and so it’s time for another update on the latest moves in the quantum space. This piece showcases a clear shift as firms move from lab work into funding, defense use, and chip scale. At the same time, new data shows that firms still seek clear use cases before they commit large funds. In turn, the space is now split between fast tech gains and slow real use.

Let’s begin.

1. Quantropi Moves Toward Public Market Listing

First on the agenda is Quantropi, which plans to go public through a deal with Mandeville Ventures Inc. The move would place the firm on the TSX Venture Exchange if all terms are met. The deal still needs key votes and at least $2 million in funding to close.

This step shows how cyber firms tied to quantum risk are seeking public funds. Quantropi develops secure data tools to protect data from future quantum attacks. In that sense, the deal reflects a wider push to build safe systems before large-scale quantum use arrives.

2. Infleqtion Wins $1 million U.S. Navy Contract

Next, Infleqtion Inc. (INFQ) won a $1 million Phase II deal from the U.S. Navy to grow its QuIRC software. The system helps read complex radio signals while cutting data load and storage needs.

Chief Technology Officer Pranav Gokhale said, “Our contextual machine learning approach allows systems to understand signals within their operational context.” In turn, this shows how quantum-linked tools are now used in real defense tasks, not just test cases. The firm will now build a full system for use in live Navy settings.

3. Groove Quantum Raises €16 million and Scales Chip Design

Meanwhile, Groove Quantum raised €16 million and showed an 18-qubit chip based on germanium spin qubits. The firm aims to scale this design to 100 qubits and then far beyond.

Chief Executive Officer Anne-Marije Zwerver said, “Quantum computing will only have a real impact if it can be engineered and manufactured at scale.” The focus here is clear: firms now seek ways to use established chip tools to build large systems at lower cost. This may help solve one of the key limits in the field, which is how to scale to a useful size.

4. Lumai Targets AI Energy Limits with Optical Compute

Next, Lumai launched its Iris Nova server, which uses light instead of silicon to run AI models. The system can run large language models in real time while using up to 90% less energy.

Chief Executive Officer Xianxin Guo said the shift to light-based computing can drive major gains in speed and power use. This move comes as data centers face a sharp rise in power demand. In turn, this shows how new compute types, not just quantum, may shape the next phase of AI growth.

5. Survey Shows Firms Want Clear Quantum Use Cases

Finally, new data from SAS shows that firms see unclear use cases as the top risk in quantum AI, above cost.

More than 500 global leaders took part in the study. Many said they want proof of real value before they invest at scale. At the same time, most expect useful quantum systems by the early 2030s. On this front, the market is in a wait phase, where interest is high but real spending is still cautious.

We used TipRanks’ Comparison Tool to track key names in the space, such as IonQ Inc. (IONQ), Rigetti Computing (RGTI), and D-Wave Quantum Inc. (QBTS). The group shows how the field is moving toward secure systems, defense use, and chip-scale, while still working to prove real value.
