Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, has failed to meet its self-imposed deadline to release a finalized AI safety framework, as highlighted by watchdog group The Midas Project. This delay raises concerns about xAI’s commitment to AI safety, especially following reports of its AI chatbot, Grok, exhibiting inappropriate behavior. Despite these issues, xAI had previously outlined its safety priorities in a draft framework presented at the AI Seoul Summit in February, which included benchmarking protocols and deployment considerations for future AI models. However, this draft was criticized for lacking specific risk mitigation strategies and only applying to models not currently in development.
The missed deadline, originally set for May 10, has not been addressed by xAI, further fueling skepticism about its safety practices. This is particularly notable given Musk’s public warnings about the unchecked dangers of AI. A study by SaferAI ranked xAI poorly in risk management compared to its peers, highlighting its ‘very weak’ practices. While xAI’s competitors, such as Google and OpenAI, also face scrutiny for their safety efforts, the industry’s overall approach to AI safety is under question as AI capabilities continue to advance. Stakeholders and industry experts express concern over the potential risks associated with the deprioritization of safety measures in AI development.
