Wayve is accelerating its global autonomous-vehicle push, planning a robotaxi pilot in Tokyo with Uber and Nissan starting in late 2026, just weeks after securing a $1.2 billion funding round. The company will embed its AI-driven self-driving system into Nissan Leaf vehicles, which are expected to operate on Uber’s ride-hailing platform in what will be Uber’s first robotaxi deployment in Japan.
The Tokyo initiative positions Wayve at the center of a broader multi-market collaboration with Uber and Nissan that also includes a forthcoming robotaxi service in London and integration of Wayve’s driver-assistance technology into Nissan production vehicles targeted for 2027. Wayve’s software, designed to run across different vehicle types and hardware stacks without HD maps, could offer a scalable path to global deployment, and the string of programs with Uber strengthens its strategic relevance as the ride-hail giant amasses more than 25 autonomous partners worldwide.
