Waymo has launched its paid robotaxi service in Nashville, marking its 11th active market and reinforcing its strategy to scale as a technology platform rather than a pure fleet operator. After months of manual and supervised testing, the Alphabet unit is opening access on a rolling basis via its own app to manage demand and maintain service quality in an initial 60‑square‑mile operating zone.
Strategically, Nashville is notable as Waymo’s first city where Lyft, rather than Uber, is the primary ride‑hailing partner, with Waymo rides to be offered in the Lyft app once operations ramp. Lyft, through its subsidiary Flexdrive, will take responsibility for fleet readiness, maintenance, charging, and depot operations, illustrating Waymo’s broader model of outsourcing operations to partners such as Avis and Moove in other cities while it focuses on autonomous driving technology and network expansion backed by $16 billion in fresh capital.
