Waymo is advancing its international expansion by beginning autonomous vehicle tests on public roads in London, a key step toward launching a commercial robotaxi service in the city as early as 2026. The Alphabet unit is using all-electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles equipped with its self-driving stack, currently operating with human safety specialists behind the wheel while it validates performance on U.K. roads and adapts to local driving norms.

The company is deepening its U.K. foothold by hiring locally, opening multiple AV service centers in London, and coordinating with emergency services as it builds the foundation for broader European operations. London could become Waymo’s first commercial market outside the U.S., complementing existing services in 11 American cities and tests in Tokyo, but timing depends on the U.K. government finalizing approvals for driverless operations amid growing competition from local players planning rival robotaxi services.
