Vital Lyfe has begun taking pre-orders for Access, its first-generation portable water filtration system designed to generate clean water on demand from sources including seawater, positioning the company for entry into the fast-growing global water market. Targeted uses include off-grid and rural living, maritime operations, exploration, and emergency response, where infrastructure is limited or compromised.
The 25-pound unit can produce up to 6 gallons (23 liters) per hour from seawater and 13 gallons per hour from freshwater, with a salt rejection rate above 99.5%, and it runs at roughly 200 W on either AC or DC power, with one to three hours of runtime per charge depending on conditions. Co-founders Jonathan Criss and Andrew Harner, both with prior engineering experience at SpaceX, built Access with automated controls over pressure, filtration, and performance to eliminate the need for specialized training, and the device is priced at $749 with an $8 pre-order deposit and initial deliveries expected later this year.
Criss framed Access as a shift away from centralized, infrastructure-heavy water systems toward decentralized, user-controlled production that can be deployed quickly in volatile environments. Harner emphasized that the team focused on simplifying desalination and energy management into a push-button interface without sacrificing reliability or throughput.
By launching Access, Vital Lyfe is positioning itself at the intersection of water scarcity, climate resilience, and distributed infrastructure, in a global water market projected to exceed $1.5 trillion. The product’s relatively low power draw and portability may make it attractive for government agencies, NGOs, and commercial operators seeking resilient water solutions, providing Vital Lyfe with early revenue potential, real-world performance data, and a platform for future product iterations and scaling.
