Vatn Systems has been named to Fast Company’s 2026 Most Innovative Companies list, reinforcing the defense-tech startup’s positioning as an emerging leader in autonomous underwater vehicles for the U.S. military, allied governments, and select commercial users. The recognition centers on Vatn’s proprietary autonomy stack, including advanced underwater navigation and cooperative swarming software designed to deploy high-performance AUVs at materially lower cost than traditional naval platforms.
CEO and co-founder Nelson Mills said the accolade validates the firm’s strategy as undersea warfare rapidly shifts toward scalable, autonomous systems, emphasizing Vatn’s goal of becoming a next-generation underwater defense prime. The award follows a series of milestone events: a $60 million Series A financing round, the acquisition of Crewless Marine to strengthen acoustic sensing capabilities critical to contested maritime environments, the company’s first international sale to Singapore’s Defense Science and Technology Agency, and deepening program and R&D engagements with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps that signal growing demand and a broadening global pipeline.
