Thoughtworks has released volume 34 of its biannual Technology Radar, signaling to enterprise technology leaders that rapid advances in AI and agentic systems are sharply increasing software complexity and associated operational risk. The consultancy warns that as AI generates ever-larger volumes of code, organizations are accumulating “cognitive debt” — a growing gap between humans and the systems they are meant to understand and govern.

Chief Technology Officer Rachel Laycock frames the current moment as a shift in technique rather than raw technology, noting that AI’s rapid progress heightens the need for disciplined engineering practices rather than reducing it. The Radar highlights a return to foundational approaches such as zero trust architecture, DORA metrics, and rigorous testability as essential tools to manage cognitive debt, maintain reliability, and preserve control over AI-augmented development.

A key theme is the security challenge posed by permission-hungry agents that seek extensive access to sensitive data and external systems, which Thoughtworks argues makes sandboxed execution and defense-in-depth architectures “non-negotiable” for firms scaling AI. The report also describes how engineering teams are experimenting with “harnesses” for coding agents — including feedforward controls and mutation testing — to constrain behavior, enable self-correction, and ensure generated code remains auditable and safe for production environments.

Thoughtworks cautions that evaluating technologies in an “agentic world” is becoming more difficult, as markets are flooded with new tools, single-contributor projects, and overlapping terminology that obscures sustainability and maturity.
