Stripe is expanding its role in the AI economy with a new billing feature that lets customers pass through and mark up large language model token costs, aiming squarely at AI startups struggling with usage-based pricing. The tool tracks API prices for selected AI models, records each end-customer’s token consumption, and automatically adds a configurable profit margin, such as a consistent 30% markup over raw model fees.
The company has also launched an AI gateway that routes requests across multiple models, while keeping its billing automation compatible with external gateways already used by developers. Stripe is not currently taking a markup on its own gateway and is rolling the new billing capability out via a waitlist, signaling a strategic push to embed itself in the financial plumbing of AI-native businesses and potentially convert a major cost-management pain point into a monetizable revenue stream for its customers.
