Stripe has launched Link, a new digital wallet designed to support both human users and autonomous AI agents, positioning the company at the center of emerging agentic commerce. The wallet, available on web, iOS, and Android, consolidates multiple payment methods—including cards, bank accounts, crypto wallets, and buy-now-pay-later options—while storing billing and shipping details to streamline online checkout.
Strategically, Stripe is using Link to solve a key trust and security gap in always-on AI agents by allowing them to initiate spending without ever seeing raw payment credentials. Users authorize agents via an OAuth flow, review and approve spend requests in real time, and will soon be able to set custom spending limits and conditional autonomy, creating an enterprise-friendly control layer for automated purchasing.
Under the hood, Link is built on Stripe’s new Issuing for agents infrastructure, which enables virtual cards with real-time authorization, granular spend controls, and full transaction visibility for agent-driven transactions. Instead of exposing primary card data, users can grant agents programmatic access to Link for single-use cards or rely on a Shared Payment Token backed by existing cards and bank accounts, effectively sandboxing agent activity.
For Stripe’s business, Link extends its platform deeper into consumer and developer workflows by becoming the default wallet for AI agents and personal assistants, rather than forcing each agent developer to build proprietary payment rails. The product also adds value for merchants by offering features like subscription tracking, automatic payment-method updates, and 90-day purchase protection on eligible transactions, which can reduce churn and increase conversion.
Over time, Stripe plans to expand Link beyond traditional payments to support agentic tokens, stablecoins, and other emerging instruments, signaling a roadmap that integrates Web3-style assets with mainstream commerce. If adoption of autonomous AI agents continues to accelerate, Link could give Stripe a defensible role as the trusted payment layer between users, agents, and merchants, reinforcing its core acquiring business while opening new revenue streams in virtual card issuance, tokenization, and high-frequency microtransactions.
