Shift5 has appointed Toby Magsig as president and interim CEO, handing him full responsibility for company strategy, operations, and execution as the operational intelligence provider moves from proof-of-concept wins to scaled deployment across defense and transportation fleets. Magsig, who previously led the Enterprise Autonomous Solutions business at L3Harris Technologies and commanded multiple U.S. Army units including the Joint Modernization Command, is expected to apply his experience integrating emerging technologies and running high-velocity programs to accelerate Shift5’s growth, deepen penetration on key platforms such as the F-16, and operationalize its next-generation capabilities, including RF-enabled GPS detection. Co-founder Josh Lospinoso is stepping back from day-to-day management but will remain on the board and concentrate on long-horizon product strategy, major technology initiatives, and strategic customer engagements, positioning the company to separate operational execution from technical vision as it deploys at greater scale.

The leadership shift follows a period of strong momentum for the Arlington, Va.–based company, which recently closed a $75 million Series C round led by Hedosophia and has been winning contracts with U.S. defense customers and major transportation operators that need real-time visibility into aircraft, vehicle, and rail systems. Board chairman Ret. Gen. Rich Clarke framed the move as a deliberate pivot toward mass-scale fielding, describing Magsig as a “force multiplier” for driving accountability and execution while Lospinoso pushes the technical frontier of Shift5’s operational technology analytics platform. For executives and investors, the appointment underscores Shift5’s intention to transition from a founder-led growth phase to a more structured, scale-focused operating model, aiming to convert rising demand for operational intelligence into recurring revenue, larger program footprints, and an entrenched role in critical fleet resilience and cybersecurity for U.S. defense and transportation infrastructure.
