PuriFire Energy Secures EU-Backed Funding for WoodVALOR Circular Bio-Based Materials Project

PuriFire Energy has shared an update. The company announced that its WoodVALOR project has secured funding from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). WoodVALOR aims to convert contaminated waste wood into higher-value products, including high-performance paints, coatings, biochar, acrylic acid, fatty acids, and bio-based binders, using advanced decontamination, fractionation, and hydrothermal processing technologies. PuriFire will focus on producing phenolic monomers from decontaminated wood lignin via hydrothermal liquefaction and biochar via hydrothermal carbonisation, with the phenolic compounds used to form bio-acrylates for water-based decorative wall paints and biochar applied in carbon sequestration and soil improvement trials.

For investors, the CBE JU funding provides third-party validation of PuriFire Energy’s technology and business model in the circular bio-based economy, potentially de-risking aspects of its R&D pipeline and supporting the development of proprietary processes and IP. Participation in a 10-partner, six-country consortium enhances the company’s visibility and may open pathways to future commercial partnerships with coatings manufacturers and industrial users of bio-based materials. If WoodVALOR successfully scales, PuriFire could gain exposure to new revenue streams in specialty chemicals, sustainable coatings, and carbon management solutions. However, the financial impact will depend on the size of the grant, the timeline to commercialization, regulatory approvals for bio-based products, and the ability to convert project results into scalable, cost-competitive offerings in markets traditionally dominated by petrochemical-based inputs.
