PuriFire Energy Secures CBE JU Funding for WoodVALOR Circular Bio-based Materials Project

PuriFire Energy Secures CBE JU Funding for WoodVALOR Circular Bio-based Materials Project

PuriFire Energy has shared an update. The company announced that its WoodVALOR project has secured funding from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). WoodVALOR aims to convert contaminated waste wood into higher-value products such as high-performance paints, coatings, biochar, and bio-based chemical intermediates including acrylic acid, fatty acids, and binders. The project involves advanced decontamination and fractionation technologies to fully utilise wood components and incorporates a consortium of 11 partners across six countries. PuriFire’s specific role includes producing phenolic monomers from decontaminated lignin via hydrothermal liquefaction and biochar via hydrothermal carbonisation, with applications in bio-acrylates for water-based wall paints and biochar for soil remediation and carbon sequestration trials.

For investors, the CBE JU funding reduces near-term project financing risk and supports PuriFire Energy’s R&D and technology validation in circular bio-based materials. Successful execution could strengthen the company’s intellectual property portfolio and position it within emerging value chains for sustainable coatings, bio-based chemicals, and carbon sequestration solutions. Participation in a multinational consortium with industrial and academic partners may accelerate commercialisation pathways and enhance credibility with future strategic partners and grant providers. While revenue impact is likely medium to long term and contingent on scaling and market adoption, the project aligns PuriFire with regulatory and customer trends favouring decarbonisation, waste reduction, and bio-based materials, potentially improving its competitive standing in the broader bioeconomy and sustainable materials sectors.
