Pivot Energy has commissioned Colorado’s first off-site net metering solar project under Senate Bill 21-261, advancing a multi-year, 27 MWdc solar portfolio it is developing for the University of Denver (DU). The 3.28 MWdc project in Johnstown, Colorado, began delivering virtual solar power to DU facilities earlier this month and is the first of six off-site sites scheduled for completion by 2027 across Adams, Mesa, and Weld Counties. This installation, comprising roughly 7,000 panels and designed to power the equivalent of at least 760 homes, establishes Pivot as an early mover in leveraging the state’s expanded virtual net metering framework for large, multi-metered institutional clients.
For Pivot Energy, the DU portfolio anchors a significant long-term offtake relationship that combines on-campus rooftop arrays with multiple off-site projects to help the university offset 100% of its electricity usage and move toward carbon neutrality. The projects are expected to reduce DU’s operating expenses through energy cost savings while also helping the institution comply with city and state building performance standards, demonstrating the commercial viability of off-site solar where campus space is constrained. The Johnstown project will provide stable lease income to local landowners over 30–40 years and generate incremental property tax revenue for Weld County, supporting Pivot’s positioning as a partner to rural communities as well as large energy buyers. Company leadership describes the project as a signal to universities, corporations, and hospitals that off-site solar with virtual bill credits is now more accessible under the new law, creating a scalable template for similar deals in Colorado and potentially other policy-enabled markets. This milestone enhances Pivot’s track record as an independent power producer and strengthens its strategic profile in the institutional and commercial solar segment.
