Perplexity has widened access to its Personal Computer product, making the local AI agent available to all Mac users through a new desktop app, shifting its agent strategy from limited release to general availability. The service, which extends the capabilities of Perplexity’s multi-model “Computer” agent from the cloud to the user’s own device, now requires a Pro or Max subscription and will replace the company’s legacy Mac app, which is being phased out to concentrate development on this new platform.
Personal Computer is designed to run autonomous AI workflows directly against a user’s local files, native Mac applications, and web resources while orchestrating more than 400 connectors and leveraging personal context via a secure environment on Perplexity’s servers. Optimized for always-on hardware such as Mac Minis and remotely controllable from an iPhone, the product aims to capture growing demand for local AI agents while positioning security and controlled permissions as differentiators, with potential to increase subscription revenue, deepen user lock-in, and expand Perplexity’s role as an AI operating layer on personal computers.
