AI search startup Perplexity is at the center of a legal battle as The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against the company for copyright infringement. This lawsuit, which follows similar actions by other media outlets like the Chicago Tribune, claims that Perplexity uses content from The Times without proper authorization or compensation. The Times argues that Perplexity’s products, which include retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) tools such as chatbots and the Comet browser AI assistant, repurpose original content from various sources, including The Times, often reproducing it verbatim or in summary form. This practice, according to The Times, undermines the value of their journalism by making it accessible without a subscription, potentially harming their business model.

In response to these allegations, Perplexity has attempted to address concerns by launching initiatives like the Publishers’ Program, which shares ad revenue with participating outlets, and Comet Plus, which allocates a portion of its subscription fees to publishers. Despite these efforts, The Times remains firm in its stance against Perplexity’s unlicensed use of its content. The lawsuit adds to the mounting legal pressure on Perplexity, with other major publishers also pursuing similar claims. Perplexity’s head of communications, Jesse Dwyer, has downplayed the impact of such lawsuits, comparing them to historical legal challenges faced by new technologies. However, the outcome of these legal proceedings could have significant implications for Perplexity’s business operations and its relationships with content creators. As the legal landscape evolves, Perplexity will need to navigate these challenges carefully to maintain its position in the AI search market.
