OpenRouter Enhances AI Tool-Calling Reliability With Auto Exacto Routing

According to a recent LinkedIn post from OpenRouter, the company has introduced an automatic routing feature called “Auto Exacto” that is now enabled by default for tool-calling requests. The post suggests this system has reduced tool error rates by 15–90% across providers and builds on an earlier “Exacto” release that showed measurable accuracy gains in benchmark testing.

The LinkedIn post explains that Auto Exacto continuously evaluates providers roughly every five minutes using throughput, tool-call accuracy based on large-scale historical data, and external benchmark scores. Providers are then grouped into tiers such as “verified good,” neutral, or de-ranked based on statistical outlier detection, while existing price, latency, and user preference ordering is preserved within each tier.

For investors, the feature indicates a strategic focus on reliability and performance differentiation in a competitive AI infrastructure market. By automatically steering traffic toward higher-accuracy and better-performing routes, OpenRouter may enhance customer retention and usage volumes, which could support revenue growth while reinforcing its positioning as a quality-focused intermediary across multiple model providers.

The post also notes plans for public per-model accuracy and benchmark dashboards, with providers given visibility into data before publication. This approach could increase transparency, incentivize provider quality improvements, and potentially deepen OpenRouter’s ecosystem role as a data-driven arbiter of model performance, creating a moat around its routing and analytics capabilities over time.
