OpenAI is reportedly exploring a custom AI-first smartphone, signaling a potential expansion from software and cloud services into vertically integrated consumer hardware. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is in talks with MediaTek and Qualcomm to co-develop a dedicated smartphone chip, with Luxshare as a design and manufacturing partner, enabling a tightly controlled hardware-software stack for its AI agents.
The envisioned device would rely less on traditional apps and more on persistent AI agents, giving OpenAI deeper system access than it can achieve through iOS or Android app frameworks and providing a richer data stream on user behavior. Kuo expects a hybrid architecture of on-device and cloud models, with component specs and supplier decisions targeted by late 2026 or early 2027 and mass production potentially beginning in 2028, while the company’s first hardware product — widely rumored to be AI-enabled earbuds — is still expected in the second half of 2026, underscoring a multi-device hardware roadmap that could materially shift OpenAI’s consumer reach, data advantage, and long-term monetization options.
