OpenAI is shelving its ambition to turn ChatGPT into a full e‑commerce transaction portal, scaling back the recently launched Instant Checkout feature after limited uptake and merchant feedback on flexibility. Instead of owning the checkout flow, OpenAI will allow merchants to rely primarily on their own payment and cart systems, while merchants that wish to can still embed checkout through apps within ChatGPT during a transition period.
The company is pivoting strategic focus toward using ChatGPT as a high-intent product discovery and comparison engine powered by its Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open e‑commerce standard built with Stripe that ingests structured data from participating merchants. OpenAI plans to enhance ChatGPT’s shopping experience with richer product intelligence, including side‑by‑side images, prices, features, and reviews, positioning the chatbot as a research and referral layer rather than a direct sales channel, which may limit near‑term commerce revenue upside but could broaden adoption, strengthen data partnerships, and preserve alignment with existing retail checkout infrastructures.
