OpenAI is deepening its commitment to AI content provenance by embedding two distinct signals into all images produced by its models, aiming to reduce the risk that its tools fuel misinformation. The company is adopting the C2PA open standard, which stores an explicit AI-generation marker in file metadata, and adding Google’s SynthID invisible watermark, designed to survive common edits such as cropping, resizing, or screenshots.

Initially limited to imagery created by OpenAI products, these measures are intended to ensure the company’s output can be reliably identified even as unmarked images from other generators continue to circulate. OpenAI is also testing a public verification tool that checks for both C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks, with the longer-term goal of covering additional AI systems and supporting broader industry adoption of provenance standards.
