OpenAI is elevating account protection for its users with the launch of Advanced Account Security, an opt-in security program aimed at high-risk and high-value ChatGPT users but open to anyone seeking stronger safeguards. As part of this initiative, OpenAI has partnered with Yubico to support two co-branded hardware security keys — the YubiKey C NFC and YubiKey C Nano — designed to mitigate phishing and unauthorized access to sensitive conversations and data tied to OpenAI accounts.
The move underscores OpenAI’s push to position security as a core pillar of its AI platform, especially for political dissidents, journalists, researchers, public officials, and enterprise users whose proprietary information may reside in ChatGPT sessions. The Yubico integration follows OpenAI’s recent introduction of a broader digital defense framework and comes amid growing evidence that cybercriminals are targeting chatbot users for extortion and data theft. While hardware keys offer materially stronger protection, OpenAI warns that losing a key can mean permanent loss of account access and stored chats, a tradeoff that customers will need to factor into their risk management and compliance strategies.
