OpenAI has made its first media acquisition, buying tech talk show TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network) as part of a broader strategy to control how AI is explained and debated, with the unit reporting into its strategy team under chief political operative Chris Lehane. TBPN, a three-hour daily live show on YouTube and X hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, has become a key insider forum for Silicon Valley leaders to discuss technology, business, AI, and defense and is reportedly on track to generate over $30 million in revenue this year.
OpenAI plans to keep TBPN as an independent brand while helping it scale, positioning the platform as both a communications asset and a profitable media property that expands the company’s influence with tech and policy elites. Head of AGI deployment Fidji Simo said OpenAI will leverage the founders’ communications and marketing expertise beyond the show itself to “bring AI to the world” and acknowledged that a nontraditional company like OpenAI cannot rely on a standard communications playbook, even as she pledged editorial independence for TBPN’s guest selection and coverage.
Strategically, the move gives OpenAI a high-visibility channel that already covers the company and its competitors, at a time when OpenAI is preparing for a potential IPO and facing intense regulatory and political scrutiny around AI, infrastructure, and environmental impact. Lehane, known for aggressive political tactics and his role in crypto super PAC Fairshake, now oversees a media property that shapes opinion among founders, investors, and policymakers, which may raise concerns about conflicts of interest and the subtle alignment of editorial framing with OpenAI’s policy agenda.
CEO Sam Altman, who has called TBPN his favorite tech show, publicly argued that the acquisition will not soften TBPN’s criticism of OpenAI, framing potential missteps by the company as continued fodder for tough coverage. TBPN’s Jordi Hays said the team was drawn by OpenAI’s willingness to accept feedback and said the deal is intended to shift their role from pure commentary toward having real influence over how AI is distributed and understood globally, suggesting OpenAI will increasingly integrate media, policy, and product strategy as it scales its AI platforms.
