Muna Therapeutics has received a $1 million research grant from the Alzheimer’s Association to accelerate clinical development of its lead candidate MNA-001, an oral small-molecule TREM2 agonist for Alzheimer’s disease. The funding will support Muna’s ongoing Phase 1 trial in healthy young and elderly volunteers and the validation of translational biomarkers that measure TREM2 activation and microglial function in both normal and disease-relevant conditions, a prerequisite for designing and de-risking Phase 2 studies in patients. By focusing on pharmacodynamic readouts and biomarker strategy, the grant directly underpins Muna’s all-in-human discovery and validation model and is intended to clarify whether engaging TREM2 can modulate microglia to clear misfolded proteins, normalize immune responses, and reduce neuroinflammation—mechanisms that could slow Alzheimer’s pathology and functional decline.

CEO Rita Balice-Gordon framed the award as strategic validation of Muna’s resilience-based approach, which shifts emphasis from simply clearing established pathology to strengthening the brain’s innate protective mechanisms in early disease. The company is positioning MNA-001 as a differentiated, orally available alternative to existing Alzheimer’s therapies by targeting microglial recalibration rather than late-stage plaque removal, with biomarkers expected to guide patient selection, dose optimization, and proof-of-mechanism in upcoming Phase 2 trials. The grant complements prior external validation from a strategic alliance with GSK, funding from The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and backing from biopharma investors, reinforcing Muna’s standing in the neurodegeneration pipeline. For executives and investors, the award reduces early clinical and translational risk around MNA-001, supports a clearer development path into Phase 2, and strengthens Muna’s position as a clinically advancing platform company in neurodegenerative disease resilience biology.
