Mistral AI has unveiled Devstral 2, a cutting-edge AI model tailored for coding, as part of its strategic push to rival larger AI labs such as Anthropic. This launch is a follow-up to the recent introduction of the Mistral 3 series of open-weight models, underscoring the company’s ambition to close the gap with its more established and well-funded competitors. Additionally, Mistral AI is entering the ‘vibe-coding’ arena with Mistral Vibe, a new command-line interface designed to enhance code automation through natural language, offering functionalities like file manipulation and version control.
Mistral AI emphasizes the importance of context awareness in business applications, a feature that is integrated into its Vibe CLI, which maintains a persistent history and can analyze file structures and Git statuses. This focus on robust workflows explains the high computational demands of Devstral 2, which requires a minimum of four H100 GPUs for deployment and boasts 123 billion parameters. However, a smaller version, Devstral Small, is available for local deployment on consumer hardware with 24 billion parameters. The models differ in licensing and pricing, with Devstral 2 under a modified MIT license and Devstral Small under Apache 2.0. The API for Devstral 2 is initially free, with future pricing set at $0.40/$2.00 per million tokens for input/output. Mistral AI has collaborated with Kilo Code and Cline for the release of Devstral 2, while Mistral Vibe CLI is accessible as a Zed IDE extension. Valued at approximately $13.8 billion, Mistral AI’s recent Series C funding round was led by ASML, which invested $1.5 billion, highlighting the company’s growing influence in the AI sector.
