LightPath Technologies is positioning itself as a key domestic supplier of infrared optics and imaging systems following the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which directs the U.S. Department of War to eliminate reliance on optical glass and optical systems from China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Belarus by January 1, 2030. Section 834 of H.R. 3838 mandates a strategy to end dependence on these “covered nations,” extending beyond finished systems to critical materials such as optical glass, creating an immediate need for compliant, traceable supply chains in defense and aerospace programs. LightPath reports that its optical assemblies, infrared cameras, and thermal imaging products are already aligned with NDAA requirements, with its proprietary BlackDiamond infrared glass technology providing a U.S.-based alternative to foreign-sourced materials for electro-optical and infrared systems across land, sea, air, and space platforms.

To scale with anticipated demand, LightPath is expanding domestic glass manufacturing through the acquisition of Amorphous Materials, Inc. (AMI), a U.S. producer of complementary chalcogenide glass. The deal adds large-diameter glass melting capabilities, increases production capacity, and creates a second NDAA-compliant manufacturing site for high-value, large-format optics used in advanced defense and space sensors. CEO Sam Rubin emphasized that the company has long prioritized supply chain security and NDAA compliance, noting that BlackDiamond was explicitly developed to mitigate material risk and availability constraints. With defense acquisition cycles requiring near-term design decisions to meet the 2030 deadline, program managers and prime contractors are already assessing compliant suppliers to avoid redesigns, recertification delays, and supply disruptions. LightPath is actively seeking early engagement with defense and aerospace customers to embed its materials and systems at the design stage, positioning the company as a risk-reduction partner and potential beneficiary of structurally higher domestic content requirements in U.S. defense optical systems.
