Just Say It: Anthropic’s Claude Code Now Takes Spoken Commands from Developers

Anthropic has rolled out a “Voice Mode” for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, allowing developers to issue spoken instructions rather than type them. The feature was announced on Mar. 3, which signals the company’s shift toward hands-free, conversational coding workflows in an increasingly competitive AI developer tools market.

Claude Code Gets Hands-Free Voice Coding

According to an announcement by Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar on X, Voice Mode is currently live for about 5% of users, with a broader rollout planned in the coming weeks. To activate it, developers type “voice” to toggle the feature on, then use a push-to-talk mechanism to speak instructions directly to Claude Code. Shihipar added that the voice input doesn’t replace typed commands, allowing developers to mix both methods in a single prompt.

He added that transcription tokens are free and don’t count against rate limits, and that Voice Mode is rolling out across Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Anthropic has not confirmed whether a third-party voice provider powers the feature, even though the company reportedly held talks with ElevenLabs in early March 2025 about voice capabilities for its standard Claude chatbot.

Voice Mode Extends Claude Code’s Market Lead

The launch of Voice Mode for Claude Code marks a shift in the competitive landscape, positioning Anthropic directly against AI and tech companies such as Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and OpenAI. Among enterprises, Claude already commands 42% of the coding market, more than double OpenAI’s 21%. Claude Code also holds over half of the broader AI coding market, per Anthropic’s partnership with Accenture (ACN).

Anthropic recently reported that its annualized revenue run-rate surged to nearly $20 billion in early March 2026, up from $14 billion the week prior, with Claude Code accounting for a significant share, as business subscriptions quadrupled since January. Unlike rivals focused on file-level suggestions, Claude Code directly edits files, runs commands, retains context across sessions, and handles multi-step workflows, capabilities now expanded with its recently introduced Voice Mode.
