OpenAI is reportedly pulling back on side projects to double down on its core strengths, especially coding tools and enterprise-focused AI. According to The Wall Street Journal, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of applications, shared the plan with employees during an all-hands meeting. Simo added that OpenAI can’t get “distracted by side quests” and must stay focused on what matters most. This shift targets fast-growing, competitive areas, as rival Anthropic, gains traction with businesses and developers while the AI race heats up.

OpenAI Refocuses on Core AI
Simo further stated that CEO Sam Altman and research chief Mark Chen are reviewing which areas to scale back, with updates expected in the coming weeks.
She emphasized doubling down on productivity—especially for business users—to stay competitive. Simo also told employees that Anthropic’s success should be a “wake-up call,” adding that OpenAI needs to regain its lead with developers and enterprise customers.
Can OpenAI Catch Up With Anthropic?
OpenAI is facing growing pressure from rival Anthropic, which has quickly become a leading AI provider for businesses after the viral success of its Claude Code and Cowork tools.
