ILIA Beauty Enters Standalone Suncare With Mineral SPF 50 Launch at Sephora

New updates have been reported about ILIA Beauty.

ILIA Beauty is expanding its skin-first product strategy with the debut of Sun Serum Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, the company’s first standalone sunscreen and a key addition to its skincare portfolio. Building on the commercial success and brand equity of Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40, the new SPF 50 product positions ILIA more directly in the daily suncare category, targeting consumers seeking high-performance mineral protection with a lighter, skincare-driven texture.

The formula is designed for daily layering and incorporates seven molecular weights of hyaluronic acid and the Aquaxyl complex to support long-lasting hydration and barrier reinforcement, while botanical extracts such as Echinacea Purpurea and Rhodiola Rosea are intended to moderate sebum production and manage shine. This positions the product to address both moisture and oil control needs, which is critical for broad adoption across skin types and may help reduce friction for repeat use.

Sun Serum delivers broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB, visible, and infrared light, and is claimed to provide up to 24 hours of hydration and up to 8 hours of shine control, with a gel-cream format that breaks into a water-like texture on application. In a consumer perception study of 53 participants, all respondents reported the formula felt lightweight and comfortable, and nearly all reported all-day shine control, while a separate 21-day instrumental study found clinically demonstrated barrier-strengthening effects, which supports ILIA’s positioning at the intersection of skincare and makeup.

Founder Sasha Plavsic noted that a standalone SPF had been the most requested product from ILIA’s customer base and that the development process took more than three years to refine texture and finish, underlining the strategic importance of this launch within the brand’s roadmap. By addressing a major gap in its lineup, ILIA is aiming to deepen engagement with existing users of its complexion products and attract new customers who prioritize mineral SPF but have historically resisted traditional, heavier textures.

The product is priced at $40 and will initially be sold exclusively via Sephora.com and iliabeauty.com starting April 7, with physical store rollout at Sephora set for April 30, reflecting ILIA’s continued reliance on prestige retail and direct-to-consumer channels for scale and brand control. Offered in two flexible shades—Light-Medium and Medium-Deep—and formulated to be non-comedogenic, vegan, cruelty-free, and suitable for sensitive skin, Sun Serum aligns with ILIA’s clean-beauty standards and disclosure practices, which include full ingredient transparency and adherence to global regulatory requirements.

For ILIA, the standalone SPF 50 launch enhances its defensibility in the increasingly crowded clean beauty and hybrid skincare-makeup segments by extending its hero franchise into a daily-use, high-frequency category. If Sun Serum gains similar traction to Super Serum Skin Tint, it could meaningfully increase basket size and purchase frequency across both online and retail channels, while reinforcing ILIA’s positioning as a clean brand capable of delivering performance-led, clinically informed formulations.
