ByteDance Seedance Videos Trigger Hollywood Backlash

ByteDance launched Seedance 2.0 in China in February, introducing an AI video generator capable of producing highly realistic clips from simple prompts. The tool quickly gained traction online as users began sharing short AI-generated videos featuring recognizable actors and film characters.

Some of the viral clips included fictional scenes, such as Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt, as well as mashups featuring characters from well-known movies. These videos spread widely on social media and drew attention from major Hollywood studios concerned about potential copyright violations.

Studios including Disney (DIS), Netflix (NFLX), Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), Paramount Global (PSKY), and Sony (SONY) soon sent cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance. Disney’s lawyers reportedly accused the company of carrying out a “virtual smash-and-grab” of the studio’s intellectual property through the model’s generated content.

Seedance Global Launch Delayed Amid Legal Concerns

ByteDance had originally planned to roll out Seedance 2.0 globally in mid-Mar, but those plans are now on hold as the company addresses mounting legal concerns. Hollywood studios have challenged the model’s use of copyrighted material, prompting ByteDance to pause the launch while reviewing potential risks.

In response, ByteDance said it is working to introduce stronger safeguards to protect intellectual property. The company’s engineers and legal teams are now reviewing the model and building filters designed to prevent the generation of copyrighted material.

Seedance 2.0 was expected to launch internationally through ByteDance’s cloud platform BytePlus, allowing startups and enterprise clients to access the model via an API. The company had also planned a standalone app for consumers outside China. For now, however, the global rollout remains uncertain, with no updated launch date as the company works to resolve the copyright issues.
