Hermeus has expanded its executive leadership team by appointing Kim Nakamaru as General Counsel, signaling a focus on scaling its defense aviation business amid rising regulatory and contractual complexity. Nakamaru, who now joins the company’s top decision-making group, brings more than 15 years of legal experience with public and private firms, including a decade in aerospace, aviation, and advanced manufacturing.

She most recently served as General Counsel at Relativity Space, where she oversaw legal, regulatory, risk, employee relations, environmental health and safety, and physical security, building the governance framework to support large-scale aerospace operations. Hermeus CEO and founder AJ Piplica said her track record in navigating demanding regulatory environments is critical as the company accelerates toward key milestones in high-speed aircraft development.

Before joining Relativity Space, Nakamaru held senior roles at EagleView and Global Eagle Entertainment, giving her additional exposure to geospatial technology, connectivity, and government-focused services. That background is likely to be relevant as Hermeus deepens its work with defense customers and manages sensitive data, export controls, and complex contracting.

Nakamaru stated that she is drawn to high-stakes, technically complex environments and aims to help Hermeus translate breakthrough engineering into operational capabilities through robust systems and strategy. Her remit is expected to cover legal risk management, regulatory compliance, and organizational policies that enable rapid hardware iteration without sacrificing safety or governance.

The appointment comes as Hermeus positions itself as a venture-backed defense aviation company focused on building some of the world’s fastest aircraft through rapid iterative prototyping. As the company works with U.S. defense stakeholders to deliver high-speed systems for the modern battlefield, having in-house expertise aligned with federal regulations, security requirements, and potential international engagements becomes increasingly material to its growth trajectory.

Nakamaru’s early career included a clerkship at the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and practice at an Am Law 100 firm, adding federal judicial and top-tier law firm experience to Hermeus’s leadership mix. She holds a J.D. from Loyola Law School and a B.A. from Princeton University and serves on the board of the California Women’s Law Center, credentials that may further support Hermeus’s governance profile as it scales and engages more deeply with government and institutional partners.
